Photographer Amanda Alessi is sharing one of her favourite weddings with us today. Here is what she has to say about it:

I’m a lover of weddings. That is probably a good start, but to be more specific I love weddings that truly reflect a couple. Witnessing and documenting these beautiful love stories makes me gosh darn happy! I get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that the smiles and beauty of people can be fresh, alive and meaningful to others in years to come.

Jenaya met Zac at a surf shop where she worked in 2009 whilst he was searching for a wet suit. They ended up going out for coffee and since that first meeting have had adventures overseas with a proposal in Cinque Terre, Italy after six hours of walking and exploring. On a side note, Zac only just wore the wetsuit for the first time last year!

The wedding was held on a 160 acre estate called Stonebarn Lodge which is set amongst lush forest, trufferie, rivers and dams in the picturesque region of Pemberton. The guest list consisted of around 50 of their closest friends and family, with both families staying at the property for four days together. A sit-down long table dinner was held under the stars with an amazing vegetarian feast created by Chef Nimrod Kazoom being a highlight of the day.

My couples aren’t interested in “1, 2, 3 cheese” shots and to be honest who really enjoys that? It is a wedding day; a celebration of love! That is why I aim to create a collection of images that tell a story, one that allows my couples to remember how they felt in certain moments throughout the day. While they are being swept up in all the excitement, I’m there capturing honest, real moments.

Light is an important aspect of my job so I spent a few hours with Jenaya the day before the wedding scouting a portrait location and finalising the timeline. The way I like to think of it is….wouldn’t it be nice to have another friend on the day sharing your pre walk-down-the-aisle excitement, pointing out you have green stuff stuck in your teeth and laughing at the best man’s speech? When I turn up on the morning of the wedding I am a friendly face rather than a stranger!

I choose to work with people who share similar values because I feel being the right fit is incredibly important. I meet all my couples (in person or via a Skype date) before anything is official, in fact, I love meeting my couples multiple times before the big day. Jenaya and Zac said right from the start that they would like to keep the wedding fun and simple. They don’t take things too seriously and this really set the tone for the whole day; DIY elements, natural surroundings and Jenaya’s stunning Grace Loves Lace dress. During the portrait session Jenaya took off her shoes as we were adventuring through the bush and for me that really just sums it up. Gone are the days where a wedding is serious and formal, which means you can marry your best friend surrounded by your nearest and dearest in a forest with no shoes if you fancy!

Plus Zac’s dad, Lionel was the celebrant and the mothers of the bride and groom styled all the flowers and table setting. Some flowers were actually grown in their own garden which I thought was pretty special.
