Barry Goldman and Tahnee-Lee Goldman from North Bondi became friends from work and over time realised that both their hearts beat to a rhythm different to everyone else. Naturally, the non-traditionalist couple wanted a unique wedding designed to celebrate the things they loved most.

The Goldman’s planned a one-of-a-kind wedding at Beta in just 8 weeks, inspired by the 1930s and bohemian details with a splash of disco. We asked the Goldmans to share their experience with us in a quick Q&A – from the planning to the special day and their tips on why planning a wedding in a shorter amount of time can be a good idea. Get inspired by their story.

The Couple

Meet the Goldmans: “Initially we were planning a small surprise wedding, knowing in our hearts that the day would never be a formal marriage ceremony. Sharing our milestone with those around us, who we adore, was vital to us. Having a good boogie, eating delicious food, listening to gifted musicians and DJs, and making memorable moments with our friends and family in a unique and romantic environment were the foundations for what our day was to be about.  We are non-traditionalists by nature so were always looking for a unique way to celebrate our nuptials.”

The Venue

What made you decide on Beta as your wedding venue?

“We attended an evening family event in October 2018 at Beta and immediately felt the space ‘spoke to us’ and our list of ‘must-haves’. As foodies we appreciated the fact that Alpha’s delicious cuisine was served, and adored the evening lighting within the venue and glowing from Castlereagh St and the fire station downstairs. We made the decision to have an evening wedding that night!”

“The interior fit out really spoke to me as my wedding dress (which I had already bought, was vintage 1930s lace) and as an interior designer, I could see a spectacular canvas to work from. We took one of the last event dates available for 2018 and arranged our wedding in just 8 weeks!”

What features of Beta stood out for you?

“Period features of the fit-out are stunning, the building has a long history – once a church and someone told me a men’s club…. these characteristics of the building created a cool vibe for us. Beta was one of the only venues that offered a minimum spend with no additional venue hire fee which worked for our budget. Another fact we really liked was that our ceremony and reception were booked at the same location. This made sense to us as we wanted a fussy-free day!”

The Wedding

How was your experience working with your event coordinator, Alice?

“Alice is amazing, helpful and very adept in dealing with the horrid ‘Bride Brain’. Super solution-focused and always available to talk – AND SHE’S FUNNY!”

What was your experience like on the big day?

“It was so much fun and seamless, but it went too fast. I really did feel so much of us and our style in the decoration of the venue, Bohemian Blooms Styling did a magnificent job creating our Modern Deco Disco theme! It really was unique, contemporary and sophisticated with a disco twist.”

What was your absolute favourite moment on the day?

“Walking into the venue, approaching the aisle hearing the band perform the acoustic version of our First Dance song: ‘The Music Sounds Better with You’ by Stardust.”

How would you describe your wedding at Beta in 3 words?

“Unique. Effortless. Contemporary.”

From one couple to another…

What is your no.1 tip for couples planning a wedding?

“Organising our wedding in a shorter amount of time reduced the longevity of the stress. You simply can’t overthink silly little details. You are forced to make the decisions faster and usually you end up at the same decision in a shorter time with more clarity. There’s no time for procrastination!”
